Akan tetapi ada satu penggunaan dalam Past Continuous Tense yang kadang membingungkan baik dalam penggunaan dalam kalimat ataupun dalam soal yaitu pada bentuk Past continuous dan simple past yang digunakan bersamaan dalam satu waktu, bahwasanya terdapat satu aktivitas yang sedang dilakukan kemudian diinterupsi oleh aktivitas lainnya satu aktifitas yang dilakukan lebih dulu dan masih sedang dilakukan ketika aktifitas lainnya terjadi. Dalam satu kalimat akan terdiri dari dua klause, beberapa klausa dimulai dengan "when" sementara juga juga bisa dimulai dengan"while". "When" paling sering diikuti oleh simple past tense, sedangkan "while" biasanya diikuti oleh past continuous. "While" mengungkapkan "durasi waktu" yang terjadi.
